Starting a blog may seem like an overwhelming task but it doesn't have to be. Planning is the key to success in virtually everything in life and this is especially true in the world of blogging. If you truly want to make money by becoming a freelance writer you need to perfect your skill and as I said in my last post, a blog is a great tool to use in order to do so.
The first step in your blogging journey is to create a plan or, as I like to say, a road map to making money as a freelance writer. Sit down with a pen and paper...I know it may sound archaic to some of you youngsters, but writers of yester year use these prehistoric tools to actually write! Now that you have your tools (it's okay your fingers will get used to the feel of the pen soon) make a list of things you enjoy or are interested in. This list will be the start of what we call your blog niche or topic. I want you to really put some thought into this list because you are going to be dedicating quite a bit of time to your subject matter.
Once you have a list of ten to fifteen niches or topics I want you to look at each of them very carefully. There are two aspects you want to keep in mind when you are narrowing down your list. First, and foremost, you MUST be interested in your topic. If you are not at least a little excited about what you are going to be writing about your blog is sure to be short lived. You are going to be doing a lot of research and exploring in this topic so you better find something you aren't going to get bored with easily. Your niche is what is going to make you money, so be excited about it! So narrow the list to your top five favorites.
Making money online as a freelance writer is the name of the game here folks. So once you have narrowed your list, we are now going to take a look at your final five from a different angle. It is time to put your money making hats on! You have to think about what other people are thinking about. Huh?! What are people looking for? What are people interested in? Can I put an original spin on my topic so I stand out in the pack? Do people really want to learn more about my niche? Once you have answered your questions, it is time decided on your perfect niche...Choose wisely!!!
Back to the pen and paper! Write your topic in big bold letters at the top of your page and circle it a couple of time for good measure. Below your topic I want you to start brainstorming about several categories that fall in line with your niche. For instance I will use myself as an example. My niche is freelance writing so I would write FREELANCE WRITING with several categories underneath. Some of these categories could be "starting a blog", "SEO content writing", "article writing", "e zine newsletters", "ghost writing", and so forth. Leave enough room under each category to break these into sub-categories. Sub-categories are actually your future blog posts. Since my blog is brand new you can see I am working from my road map. I have several post topics under my "starting a blog" category that I will be writing about in the days to come. I will then move on to my next subject which will be "SEO content writing", which will have several related posts as well.
I know this blog seemed like you were sitting in a 9th grade creative writing class but I wanted to stress the importance of planning ahead and putting forth some serious thought to this process. If you thought this was going to be easy and you could just open a free blog, write a few post and the money would start pouring in, I suggest you stop now. Being a successful freelance writer means you have to put in the work and preparation. If you are willing to do this, then by all means, come back to my site and I will give you the road map for your journey.
